Japanese sake breweries and distilleries in numbers, 2026
We counted the 2,616 sake, shochu, wine, whisky and liqueur producers listed on Terroir HUB by prefecture, founding year and whether they accept visitors (as of October 25, 2026). All figures come from our own listings, not from official government statistics.
Key facts
- Terroir HUB lists 2,616 Japanese alcohol producers as of October 25, 2026: 1,562 sake breweries, 389 shochu and awamori distilleries, 473 wineries, 67 whisky distilleries and 125 liqueur and umeshu makers.
- Niigata has the most sake breweries in our listings (92), followed by Hyogo (83), Nagano (79), Fukushima (65).
- For shochu and awamori the leading prefecture is Kagoshima (118); for wine it is Yamanashi (96).
- Of the 1,426 sake breweries with a known founding year, 514 (36%) were founded before 1868.
- We confirmed on official websites that 234 sake breweries in 42 prefectures accept visitors. 159 of them (68%) require a reservation, and 23 mention an English tour or English materials.

How we count
- We count producers listed on Terroir HUB. When one company runs breweries in different places, each site is counted.
- Listings are based on producers' official websites and public information such as prefectural brewers' associations. Our counting differs from official statistics (e.g. the National Tax Agency), so the numbers will not match.
- Counts change as we update listings; this page is regenerated from our data.
